The motto of Guerilla Gardening is: “Why not use public spaces to for growing food and flowers, without asking in advance?” Established in 2009, this initiative is made up of an independent group of people committed to sustainability and community. Their garden beds are spread all over Vienna – essentially anywhere with a suitable patch of soil. One long-standing bed is located on Längenfeldgasse, for example. The garden is planted with vegetables of all kinds, and many of the neighbors come to help water the plants. This kind of gardening requires accepting setbacks, as beds could be turned into construction sites or parking lots without notice. Garden plans and environmental action are discussed at regular meetings, along with events and workshops for children. New faces are always welcome.
