Selbsternte-Parzellen (Self-Harvest Plots)

The idea of Self-harvest farming was develloped in the late 1980s in response to an increasingly anonymous agricultural industry, and due to the desire for insight and active participation in food production. In 1987, the first self-harvest sites were launched in and around Vienna.

The owners of self-harvest plots are primarily farmers, who provide tilled urban land and organic seeds. At these plots, regulated organic farming is required of both the land-suppliers and the tenants. In the spring, tenants pay an annual fee for a prepared garden plot, and from that point on, they assume the care and harvest of their plot. When the season ends in late October, the plots are returned.

The self-harvest concept promotes both designing a garden with herbs and flowers, and getting to know other tenants—so plots are kept open and free, without fences. Some farm locations offer workshops and events, but there is also a brochure on the Selbsternte website for more information. Besides Vienna, these self-harvest gardens are also available in Lower Austria, Salzburg, and Styria, as well as Germany (see www.selbsternte.at).
